@Anna.C: Thanks Anna - he does photograph trees a lot doesn't he and I really love that series of his from Kussharo Lake in Japan. This tree that I photographed here is actually in England but it could just as well have been somewhere in Japan too. It's quite common in my experience to see trees on the edge of a lake growing away from the other trees that are around them and toward the water which is where there is most light.
