Sunrise at St Mark's Square

Posted by
Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 4 November 2013 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

This is the classic view from the Piazzetta end of St Mark's Square. It was photographed at dawn with the rising sun shining through the arches of the Doge's Palace.

On top of the column on the right is a statue of the winged lion of St Mark who is the patron saint of the city.

And no body there....you're lucky ! I love the triangle made from de palace up to the right side and the white line coming down. I hope my explanation is clear....

@Veronique: Thanks Veronique! It was a big help that I was there for 6 days so I could keep going back to specific places that I was interested in photographing. The 30 second exposure time helped a little with minimising the people in the shot but the main reason is that it was so very early in the morning before most of the tourists had started to arrive.

I went here last month, sadly it wasn't at sunrise, was in the middle of the day packed with 1000's of people. Hardly got a decent photograph. This is remarkable and suffers little of the problems i faced :)

@Ainsley: Hi Ainsley - I can imagine how frustrating that must have been for you. We were lucky that we were staying in an apartment just 5 minutes walk from St Mark's Square and also we were there for 6 days so could keep returning to favourite spots. With St Mark's Square I found that there was a half hour window of opportunity around dawn between the time when the litter was all being cleared away and then the first tourists arriving.
