Charles Darwin

Posted by
Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 5 August 2013 in Architecture and Portfolio.

The 2 ton marble statue of Charles Darwin in the Natural History Museum in London.

The statue is by the sculptor Sir Joseph Boehm and was unveiled in 1885 a few years after Darwin's death.

I love the quality of the light in the Natural History Museum and this statue is placed in a prime spot on the main staircase where the white marble is lit up by shafts of light .

Looking very omnipresent in the light you afford him, very grand.

@Ainsley: Thanks Ainsley!

Ian Smith from London, United Kingdom

Good shot Ian. You must have been there at a quiet time - I remember waiting ages to try and get something similar, and eventually giving up by the throng of dawdlers.

@Ian Smith: Hi Ian - I must have struck lucky with my timing as it wasn't too bad and I only waited about 5 minutes before I was able to get this photo. The wide angle lens helped as it meant I could get quite close to the statue.

Very nice use of light and shadow, as well as a subtle use of color throughout this image.
