Canary Wharf Tube Station

Posted by
Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 25 January 2013 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

A photo looking upward along the line of escalators that rise toward the exit in the cathedral-like space of the London underground station at Canary Wharf.

This is the last of my London shots. Starting Monday I'll be posting a series of colour and b&w photos that I took during a recent trip to the beautiful city of Paris.

@JacklineG: Thanks Jackline!

Gérard Beullac from Paris, France

A pure "science-fictionnesque" image !

25 Jan 2013 6:53am

@Gérard Beullac: Thanks Gérard. It's certainly a dramatic architectural space and one of the busiest in London with 40 million people a year using it.

"that's no moon" - Somehow both beautiful and slightly menacing. This is why I continue to be intrigued by photography: it doesn't have to be earth-shattering, but that a 2-dimensional presentation of light values/hues can somehow make us think and make us feel is fascinating. You pull that off more than most of us. Good stuff Ian.

25 Jan 2013 7:50am

@tim /\ʌ°: Thanks Tim - with such strong architectural shapes and contrasting light you can't really go wrong taking a photo in this space. The main constraint in many areas of London these days for photographers is actually getting the shot quickly before security arrive to tell you that it's forbidden.

I'm entering a space ship !

Ian Smith from London, United Kingdom

Great shot Ian! I know how awkward it is to get this angle with that big pillar in the way. I was there last week testing out my new RX100, but didn't quite have a wide enough angle. However, there is a double exit at the other end in a similar design, but smaller - I'll try and post them soon.

25 Jan 2013 10:26am

@Ian Smith: Yes, that pillar is certainly awkward. It means composing the shot without the benefit of the viewfinder or LV screen. I didn't see the other exit unfortunately.

Focales from Rhône-Alpes, France

Nice perspective and angle.

@Focales: Thanks Marie!

Hans ter Horst from Dippach, Luxembourg

Beautiful work in London! No problem setting up a tripod in the station? Usually the guards ask to see the permit to photograph in Canary Wharf station.

25 Jan 2013 11:58am

@Hans ter Horst: Hi Hans - I didn't use the tripod for this one and I was no more than about 30 seconds taking the photo.

Andrew Atkinson from Hartlepool, United Kingdom

@Bruno F: Thanks Bruno! Re the size, although I'm an A member I prefer the standard 800px wide layout to the larger option.
