London Eye

Posted by
Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 21 January 2013 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Photographed at dusk this is the giant 120 metre diameter ferris wheel located on the south bank of the River Thames in London.

For any of you interested in seeing a really wonderful colour photo of this ferris wheel take a look at Ryan Hammond's fantastic image from April 2012:

Superbement réussi ! C'est toujours difficile de faire des poses longues quand il y a de la végétation, il ne faut pas qu'il y ait un souffle de vent ! Bravo ! Bonne journée Ian

@JacklineG: Thanks Jackline. High winds can make long exposure difficult technically but trees can still look good: http://ianbramham.aminus3.com/image/2012-03-28.html

Hans ter Horst from Dippach, Luxembourg

Fabulous, amazing how you manage to find new ideas and twists for subjects where so many have gone before you, very refreshing!

Absolument superbe Ian, London Eye ressemble ici à un gros ventilateur et ta composition est grandiose dans ces beaux noir et blanc que tu maitrises si bien

Veronique from France-and-, Switzerland

20 seconds ? does the weel turns very slowly ? the people didn't move ? I wonder how you manage :-)))) my pictures would turn up blur in such condition.

21 Jan 2013 11:13am

@Veronique: Thanks Veronique. The wheel doesn't stop but it only moves very slowly, and I wasn't really worried whether there was perimeter blur on the edge of the wheel as it makes a nice contrast with the parts of the photo that are still.

Adrian Park from Whitley Bay, United Kingdom

Masterful as ever. I shy away from B&W photography after dark because I find it very difficult to get results I'm happy with, but this has provided a little kick up the ****!

I also just read your final article on composition which I found very interesting and I look forward to reading the previous 4 (can't now as I'm on lunch break!).

21 Jan 2013 12:33pm

@Adrian Park: Hi Adrian - I find the conversion of night photos to b&w more difficult than daylight ones but it's very satisfying when they work out. (I'm pleased you liked the blog article!)

I thought it was very gracious of you to include Mr. Hammond photo along with yours. Unlike you, he was lucky to not have people milling about during his exposure. I really like your photo in B&W, its exposed beautifully and pops with vibrancy, and the people actually work OK with this image. Excellent photo once again.

Wonderful :)

DarkElf from Perth, Australia

superb composition and excellent long exposure! the effect of the turning wheel is quite mesmerising - almost as if it was "sucking" the people towards it and the blurry motion emphasises that for me...
