Battersea Power Station, London

Posted by
Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 8 October 2012 in Architecture and Portfolio.

My Website Blog - 26th Sept 2012 - I've posted a new blog article on my website about a really great smartphone app that I use all the time for my landscape photography. It's called "The Photographer's Ephemeris" Click here to go to

This Photo: This is a 2 minute long exposure photo of the famous 1930s power station located on the banks of the River Thames in south west London. I've found out since taking this photo that this is the same power station that was used by Pink Floyd for the cover of their 1977 album "Animals"

I was lucky that the direction of movement of the clouds in the sky followed the movement of the water along the Thames.

JacklineG from Béarn, France

2 minutes de pose avec le ND 1000 je suppose ? Le résultat est fabuleux ! le mouvement des nuages, les reflets, les nuances tout est parfait ! Bonne journée

8 Oct 2012 5:29am

@JacklineG: Thanks Jackline - I actually used 2 stacked nd filters for this shot (a 10 stop and a 6 stop combined)

Gérard Beullac from Paris, France

Yes, Animals ! Not a reference for feeling young and fresh .... ;-))
The result is very attractive and seducing, with these deep black tones;

Fabulous! I drop by this place myself from time to time. I also like the Buddhist Peace Pagoda nearby as a subject.

8 Oct 2012 8:06am

@Hans ter Horst: Thanks Hans - I didn't have very long and didn't get to see the Pagoda which was a shame.

Andrew Atkinson from Hartlepool, United Kingdom

Ian, I do like that the water and sky moving in the same direction and also the towers in the water. It maybe my monitor but the bottom of the image seems too dark for my taste.

8 Oct 2012 8:28am

@Andrew Atkinson: Hi Andrew - yes the bottom of the image is pretty much as black as the power station.

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

2 minutes of peace and silence in London, what a great way to express it.
I read recently that Mr. Abromovic might want to buy this place as part of plans for a new ground for Chelski - surely someone must have more imaginative plans??

8 Oct 2012 11:32am

@Curly: Hi Curly - it appears that there have been quite a few proposals for the site over the last 20 years that have proved too expensive to implement or the owners went bust
