@Andrew Atkinson: Thanks Andrew. Apart from the b&w conversion and crop this was pretty much straight out of the camera.

If you do not mind, I am interested in getting a new canon lens and was just curious what you use for most of the shots? I really appreciate it!

3 Oct 2012 2:44pm

@Brandon: Hi Brandon - I use a full frame Nikon camera and lenses rather than Canon. It's difficult for me to recommend something for you as I don't know the Canon lenses and what their strengths and weaknesses are.

The lens used for this shot is a Nikon 16-35VR f4 (VR meaning it has a vibration reduction mechanism). I use it on a full frame DSLR rather than one with an APSC sized sensor so the 16-35 is it's true 35mm equivalent focal range ie: 16mm which is extreme wide angle to 35mm which is merely normal wide angle.

I've used this lens a lot for landscape photography in bad weather and it is weather sealed which is an important consideration for both camera and lens if you are into that kind of photography.

Brandon from New York, United States

Thank you very much for the response. I currently have an EF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS lens, which has a 35mm-equivalent focal length approx. 1.6x the lens focal length. Obviously the quality is no where as good. That's why I was try to find a good equivalent lens to what you use. Thanks again for the help!

This is an interesting departure from what you have been posting, it appears you were experimenting a bit to find what the new camera is capable of. I am always interested in your settings and this was an interesting combination. I like the over all effect of the back lighting in this photo.
