Sunrise at Llandudno Pier

Posted by
Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 8 June 2012 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

View Larger:
Llandudno is a lovely seaside town in north Wales with a truly splendid victorian pier that is a wonderful subject for photography when low tide coincides with the sunrise as in this photo.

For this shot I used a 6 stop nd filter over my 16-35vr wide angle lens to achieve a 4 second exposure so smoothing any distracting waves.

NIKON D700 4 seconds F/16.0 ISO 200 16 mm (35mm equiv.)

A sooty sky, pushed aside by the light of the dawn, is a great gift for those who wake early.
Superb achievement, Ian !

Ian, great shot. The colour is lovely and subtle. I like how you can see the rocks under the water in the foreground. What make of filtervdidmyou use?

8 Jun 2012 6:33am

@Andrew Atkinson: Thanks Andrew.
Re the filter question: the 6 stop filter that I used for this shot is a circular one made by a company called 'B W'. All my other filters are from Lee. I find the Lee system with it's slotted holder a lot easier to use than my circular B W filters so I've been meaning to get one of the Hitech (Lee compatible) 6 stop square filters to replace this B W 6 stop.

This truly is splendid Ian! I wonder, though, whether using a polariser would allow more of the rocks in the water to be shown? (Just a thought :-) I do love how quite the ND's have made the water.
