"Out of the Blue"

Posted by Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 23 March 2011 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

I was lucky enough to get a full days photography last Saturday with John Leech and Mike Spriggs and we ended up at the lighthouse at the Point of Ayr in north Wales at dusk.

There were quite a few photographers there but the anticipated sunset never really materialised and everyone but John and I had left the beach as night fell. I'm glad we didn't leave with the others as 'out of the blue' we were lucky enough to witness the most amazing moonrise that either of us has ever seen.

Like what you see here and are interested in photographic composition?.....the blog section of my website now has a complete set of 5 articles covering my personal approach to the subject: Ian Bramham Photography - Blog

Dustin W. Fletcher from Dallas, United States

Was this the "supermoon"? Love the way it just burns through the clouds. Also like the subtlety in the rest of the image.

24 Mar 2011 5:43am

@Dustin W. Fletcher: Yes, it was Dustin, although I hadn't realised beforehand that it was going to be special. It was pure luck that I was on a beach with a lighthouse handy when it unexpectedly and suddenly popped up above the horizon just after night had fallen. Lucky wasn't I!

The evening previous to this I had been on a different beach but only had a wide angle lens with me. For tomorrow's image I'll show you how small a 'super moon' can look without a telephoto lens to hand.

this is simply stunning!

28 Mar 2011 10:53am

Russ Devan from New Hanover, PA, United States

This is a superb image, Ian. I love the simple composition. The glow of the moon through the clouds nicely adds to this. Is it my imagination or is the image tilted slightly to the left?

28 Mar 2011 1:47pm

@Russ Devan: Hi Russ! No it's not your imagination as the lighthouse has been undermined by the incoming tide over the years and has a slight tilt toward the sea.
