Shadow & Light Abstract

Posted by
Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 28 July 2010 in Abstract & Conceptual and Portfolio.

A mobile phone photo from a sunny canteen early one morning a few weeks ago, with shadow and light making abstract patterns across the table and chairs.

Ignore the exif data at the side of the photo where it says it was an exposure of 1024 seconds....I don't know how Aminus3 worked that one out as it's wrong!

It keeps you looking at it! Good spot, and isn't it great how useful the phone cam can be?

@Richard: Thanks Richard....this one is 5mp. They are becoming very capable these days aren't they!

yz from Budapest, Hungary

i love this one, so simple and so strong, 99 out of 100 photographers would have dismissed it

@yz: Thanks yz!.....once you start becoming aware of shadows like this it's difficult to ignore them

Posseder a quite new nikon D700 and to photograph with a telephone, a height ! ;-)) but, I do admit that it's a beautiful abstraction and play of light and shadow !

28 Jul 2010 5:48pm

@Anna.C: :-) It's the photo that counts rather than the gear that took it! (mobile phone cameras are very capable these days...this one is 5mp and I'm sure they'll eventually replace dedicated compact digital cameras)

Anna.C from LA ROCHELLE, France

It isn't worth it that I invest in a new very expensive camera, then ;-)

28 Jul 2010 6:51pm

@Anna.C: good question Anna!'s that old law of diminishing returns isn't it.

Your D40x is almost identical to my D40 so I'd be a hypocrite to say that you won't see any improvements if you move uo to a D700 like the one I've recently aquired but the improvements won't match the increased cost of the vastly more expensive camera.

I've done a brief review on Flickr of the major differences that you'll notice if you move from a D40 to a D700.....I can send you the link if you are interested.

Daryl Johnson from Farnham, United Kingdom

Very interesting, well observed.

Thanks, Ian ! I think my choice will be only on the new D300s, less expansive and a very good one I think. I've time to think about this purchase, my little D40X is still a good fellow ;-))

you have a great eye for compositions and for seeing the "abstract" concepts in every day life to make excellent photos out of them - this is a prime example - superb!
