Under the Bridges

Posted by
Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 16 April 2010 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Photographed at the edge of city centre Manchester where the layers of railway and pedestrian bridges cross the victorian canal network.

For me, this is visually the most dramatic part of Manchester yet also the hardest to photograph - the scale is very difficult to portray in a photo and the strong shadows and light are challenging.

A wonderfully complex scenery, I've seldom seen bridges over bridges like here. Shooting on a cloudy day seems to be an ideal solution for situations like this - well done!

This is a beautiful and compelling image, Ian. The classic forms so readily present here seem to morph into abstraction - and through a passage of negative light. So many elements in an image that still manages to evoke an air of dignity and serenity. Masterful.
