No, I don't use flash at all for my landscape photos. When sand is wet like this it acts a bit like a mirror reflecting a lot of light which is one of the reasons why I love photography on the coast so much.

I don't know if you get much chance to photograph in places like this but to get this effect it's always better to photograph on a receding tide rather than an incoming one so that the sand/mud is still wet.

The other good alternative is just after heavy rain.

@Alun: Thanks Alun!.....I often deliberately add a vignette in post processing for that reason but it's a natural one in the case of this photo.
