Manchester Civil Justice Centre

Posted by
Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 18 November 2009 in Architecture and Portfolio.

A new building in Manchester city centre that has won many architectural and engineering awards.

Despite the fact that I'm not really that happy with this photo it was published recently in 'Building' magazine which is the UK's biggest weekly glossy construction magazine.

Here's a link to Wikipedia's article on the building: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_Civil_Justice_Centre

Yes, Ian. We have seen more breathtaking output from you, but this works too! Loved the sense of dynamism from the lines of the building as well the motion of the clouds (thanks to your mastery of long exposure)...

I bet you were chuffed to see it published? I can't figure out why the photo doesn't work all that well but I do like the processing a lot. It has a gritty feel to it which a lot of your photos have. How do you achieve that? When I process my images they generally retain that crispness about them whereas sometimes I'd like a grainier look. Adding film grain doesn't seem to work in Photoshop, I find it just looks rubbish.

@Mike: It's always a huge buzz to see one of my photos published Mike!....it's such a dramatic building and one that should be very photogenic but I don't really feel that I've done the best that I could manage with this one particuarly at the base where it is very murky on this photo. I'm not convinced about the composition either if the truth be known! (maybe it's the tree top left blurred by the long 4 minute exposure?)

I'm not sure what you mean about the gritty feel as I don't think I added any extra grain when I processed this particular shot. There's loads of added contrast of course if that's what you mean which, as you know, can add noise as a by product of that process.

I disagree with you, this is a nice architectural picture. Strange building, I'm not sure to like it, but nice image.

A remarkable building, one must have an airy feeling working in these prolonged balcony offices.
I like the image, but I think I guess why you are not fully happy with it. Correcting the pespective from this lateral angular perspective is extremely difficult, something I often try to avoid. Your image is excellent, though.

Very nice use of wide-angle.

I wonder if some greater definition to the right hand side of the building, perhaps a little extra shadow detail, would counterbalance the effect of the tree to the left?

@Curly: good point!...it's very bright over there on the right isn't it.
