Paris in the Snow

Posted by
Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 5 January 2009 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

A photo from my Christmas trip to Paris.

It snowed early one morning and I was lucky enough to be able to take a few photos. This photo shows a seagull perched on the ice on a frozen fountain in the Tuileries Gardens near the Louvre .

You can see the ferris wheel of the Place de La Concorde in the background.

What a great shot Ian! The shallow depth of field makes the background just perfect for this shot! Nice black & white tones.
Happy 2009 to you!

@bluechameleon: Thanks Sharon....I'm slowly learning the best ways of using such a long telephoto lens. I prefer wide angle photography normally.

Very good DOF and b/w for this unusual picture of that place. The composition is very good and one can feel the cold.

@Paco Díaz: Thanks Paco...we had a great time in Paris and I managed to get out with the camera a fair bit so I've got lots of photos I want to post.

Viewfinder from Bradenton, United States

This gull looks cold and depressed. Does it snow often in Paris?

5 Jan 2009 8:38pm

@Viewfinder: Hi Glenn....we often go at Christmas to spend some time with my wife's family. It is usually a lot colder than where we live in the north of the England and I've been there when temperatures were as low as -10degC. I guess it's more of a continental weather system than the UK. As for snow though it's pretty rare and I think I've only seen it snow there 3 or 4 times at Christmas in the last 25 years or so.

The weather lady on the French TV said the snow on the morning of this photo was unexpected and they put the cause down to pollution in the air above the city combined with the cold weather.

An original view!

5 Jan 2009 11:39pm

amy from Nanaimo, BC, Canada

Brilliant as always, Ian! Truly brilliant! I think it's the almost shallow dof that still allows the viewer to see life going on around this loan gull but can feel it's consternation, if you will (and sorry for humanizing the gull's emotions.. if they have emotions... LOL!)

6 Jan 2009 2:58am

Bahar from Toronto, Canada

nice DOF, and composition!

Absolutely brilliant. Fantastic BW.

João Mourão from Amadora, Portugal

Fantastic B&W shot. It seems the seagull is part of the fountain, like if it's made of stone.

Excellent shot. I love how the people seem to all be walking toward that thing that looks like a starburst. Honestly, the foreground with the bird is definitely nice but I think the photo may have been stronger without him.
