Re. the camera choice, most modern DSLRs are so good these days that you don't need to spend a ton of money to get decent results (although I'd like a digital back Hassleblad very much if anyone's got one lying around that they don't use anymore LoL!)
@Marhilde: Thanks Marhilde!....the colours in night time photos always seem to have great intensity. It's something to do with the way camera sensors work - they are more sensitive than our eyes to colour at night.

My favourite type of photography is landscapes on the beach and we were staying in a house 50 meters from this spot so you can imagine how happy I was!
