@Gilles: I can't speak for Maria (she's a wonderful photographer isn't she!) but for me I guess you need to look further back to influences from the work of more famous b&w photographers than us such as Michael Kenna, Ansel Adams, Edward Steichen and Bill Brandt as they have been the biggest influences on my own photography.
