Crosby BeachPosted by Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 4 August 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. A photo from Crosby Beach in NW England. I'm exploring ways of incorporating light & shadow in my B&W photos at the moment but it's a bit hit and miss as I experiment with some of the basics. Hopefully I'll improve with a bit of practice as I think it's got a lot of potential. For purchasing high quality archival prints of any of these photos you can send me an email by clicking here or by going to MY NEW WEBSITE where prices are listed in the gallery sections under each individual photo. Links to the websites of other photographers whose work I love and who have all helped me enormously over a long period of time. I find the work of all 3 to be inspirational.

The pipeline just dances with your eyes, and they flow into the depths of this image before you know it's even happening. The light and shadow work here is superior. 4 Aug 2009 7:58pm Frida from SwedenI like the darker sky against the light beach. The pipeline gives so much deapth to the picture. 4 Aug 2009 8:45pm Ian Smith from London, United KingdomFantastic composition Ian. The shadow/highlight is spot on IMO. Well done! 4 Aug 2009 9:30pm Sophie Asselin from Montréal, CanadaVery beautiful ! I like the contrast and the composition. Congrats ! 4 Aug 2009 10:06pm C.K.S from KL, MalaysiaWow this is just a great shot. What sort of conversion do you use? 5 Aug 2009 4:01am @C.K.S: Thanks!.....I shoot in RAW and process my Nikon NEF RAW files in their proprietary software 'Capture NX2'. I then export the file to Photoshop CS3 as a 16 bit Tiff file and convert it to B&W using CS3's excellent dedicated B&W conversion tool. I then add contrast and do some dodging and burning to get the depth and range of tones from shadows to highlights. Basically I do it by eye rather than using any kind of set formula. Michael Rawluk from Williams Lake, BC, CanadaThe shooting angle, with the DoF, gives it a very nice look. Excellent processing. 5 Aug 2009 4:05am Stu from Kyoto, JapanOops. Thought I'd commented on this already. Another magnificent shot Ian. I particularly love the way the sky came out, and that ship on the horizon is just the clincher. 27 Aug 2009 2:45pm |
