The Albert Dock, Liverpool

Posted by Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 22 July 2009 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

A long exposure photo of the Albert Dock and the River Mersey in Liverpool.

The vignette is a natural effect from stacking neutral density filters in front of this extreme wide angle lens.

Amazing shot. Can you please tell me what kind a grey filter you are using for this kind of images? Thank you. /Renata

@Renata: Thanks Renata....I use screw-in circular neutral density filters made by a German company called "B W" I have a 10 stop version and a 6 stop one and I stacked them over the front of the lens to get this length of exposure. A normal exposure without the filters would have been about 1/800th of a second instead of the 2 minutes and 22 seconds of this version. As you can see, stacking filters in front of such an extreme wide angle lens is not really recommended as it produces a dark vignette effect around the edge of the frame where the light entering the lens is catching the edge of the filter.

Luca Bobbiesi from Milano, Italy

Wow Ian! This is really a wonderful shot. The contrast between the smooth still water and the texture and shadows on the sidewalk are really something! Depth of field and perspective, top notch! Added to me collection at vfxy :)

I love the tones in this image and the long exposure. However, I think the composition would be stronger by having the railing emerge from the lower right corner of the frame.

Looks like I missed a few of these while I was on holiday. Nice one, the flattening effect on the water makes for a compelling composition. You got the balance and glow spot on.
