Angles

Posted by Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 30 March 2009 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

This is a photo from Halifax in the north of England where I was struck by the dramatic layering and juxtaposition of bridges and buildings in the town centre.

John Leech from Grange-over-Sands, United Kingdom

I love the linear contrast compared to the Liverpool option... photographically speaking, of course.

Pressed post too soon! It is interesting to compare these concrete flyovers with the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle. In a lot of ways, that one is equally out of place, but the visual effect is so different.

@John Leech: Hi John....yes, the huge scale of these modern concrete overpasses looks so out of place they have a surreal quality to them.

Frida from Sweden

My eyes got stuck on the two "things" on the chimney :-) Looks like someone's sitting there.

@Frida: Hi Frida...they are chimney pots rather than people :-)

MadScientist from Düsseldorf, Germany

Looks indeed very artificial, like somebody scrambled various layers into one image. It's a contrast of old structures vs. new ones too.

Such wonderful balance here Ian. The angles and curves work so well with this image. I really like the textures and varying tone and detail of the brick.

When I first looked at this yesterday I didn't really rate it but coming back today for a second look my opinion has changed. I like the fact that the new bridges run over the top of the old one but it's the angles that really make this picture work so well. If you've got a couple of minutes spare I'd genuinely appreciate your honest opinion on my latest post. Cheers.
