"Capture Manchester" Photo Competition

Posted by Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 27 March 2009 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

I've heard recently that I'm one of 9 winners in a Manchester based photo competition.

The prize is £500 each which is really great!

Manchester Evening News - Press Announcement

MEN - Winning Images

They are going to make postcards for sale in the city from the winning entries and there's an exhibition at the 'Cube' gallery in the city centre - opening night and press publicity is this evening starting about 7.30pm.

One of the judges is a world famous British landscape photographer called John Davies whose photos are also on display at 'Cube' at the moment so I'm really looking forward to meeting him.

This is my winning photo - ironically it was one of my first ever with the D40 and I can see lots of technical things wrong with it now that I would do differently.

Like what you see here and are interested in photographic composition?.....the blog section of my website now has a complete set of 5 articles covering my personal approach to the subject: Ian Bramham Photography - Blog

For purchasing high quality archival prints of any of these photos you can send me an email by clicking here or by going to my website Ian Bramham - Fine Art Photography where prices are listed in the gallery sections under each individual photo.

Your success is richly deserved (but then I am biased).
To me, your entry is the stand out image...but I am worried and suspicious about the 14 year old' s entry!!!

John Leech from Grange-over-Sands, United Kingdom

Its one of those shots that I can keep coming back to and finding more. The shear range of colour is something I particularly enjoy in the shot.

Difficult to decide what to spend the money on? -- Treat the family to a slap-up meal, or buy a new lens? :-)

Very nice wide angle composition.

28 Mar 2009 5:30pm

Mike Paulison from United States

This is really beautiful. The striking thing for me is the smoothness of this. The lighting is really nice and moody. I wouldn't be shocked to see a dark mysterious figure skulking about here.

Excellent shot. I really like the warm glow of the street light and how other temperatures are mixed in. The contrast between the old tower and new one is cool, too. Nice.

Congratulations Ian. Out of interest I'd love to know what you think is technically wrong with the picture. Personally I think it's a great photo.

Ian Bramham from Manchester, United Kingdom

Thank you all for your support and encouragement on this one....I really appreciate it!

I went along on Friday night for the presentation ceremony and first evening of the exhibition at the 'Cube' gallery in Manchester. It was truly an amazing experience as it was the first time I've ever seen one of my photos hung on the wall in a proper art gallery.

I don't know why but I wasn't expecting either such a wonderful and professionally presented exhibition or such a fantastically high standard of photography amongst the 600+ images on display.....it made me realise just how lucky I was to have picked up one of the prizes.

Hey Ian, this is beautiful. This is an older post but if you happen to see this comment, you wrote "I can see lots of technical things wrong with it now that I would do differently", and well damned if I can see anything wrong, as a learning experience, what do you see wrong here?

10 Apr 2010 4:53am

@tim: Hi Tim,

I guess the main one is that I framed it too tight which meant that there was no room to correct the perspective distortion on the right hand near building. These days I try and either get my building verticals properly plumb of else obviously and intentionally tilted - I find the slight angle on this one annoying.

The second technical thing is focus - the far tower isn't 100% sharp when viewed at large scale so I must have been focusing on something in the very near foreground (I was able to correct that using 'focus magic')

tim from high desert, United States

Thanks for taking the time, learned something.
