The Hidden City #2

Posted by Ian Bramham (Manchester, United Kingdom) on 4 December 2007 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Part of Manchester city centre that visitors to the city rarely see as it is so far below normal street level.

Marvelous night images --especially the B&W work. How do you convert to B&W --channel mixer and finesse, or some other process?

@Twelvebit: I am a beginner both to photography and Photoshop so I try and keep everything as simple as possible.

The method that I use for conversion is an automated one within Photoshop Elements 5. There are 4 or 5 pre-set B&W conversion options which each give slightly differing styles (I never use the 'newspaper' style one)....from that start point you can alter the amount in each colour channel using a very simple automatic interface. The final bit I do is to adjust lce usm, contrast, light and shadow to the point where I feel happy with it. Oh, yes, on some shots I also do a bit of dodging and burning...it depends on the image.

I'm still trying to get to grips with layers but it's something I definitely want to do in time.

Your b&w work is very good. I really like the mood it evokes. Love the ultra wide shots especially .
