For anyone from the UK (like me) strong light and shadows like these are very exotic as we never normally get light like that so this photo also reminds me of the Meditteranean which I love.

@dee: Thanks Dee! - I always find that there's something very satisfying about diagonal lines in photos and I guess that it was that side of it as much as the architecture that I liked!
